By George Smith, Senior Analyst, Disputes, Investigations and Valuations.

In this article, George Smith, a Senior Analyst in our Disputes, Investigations and Valuations team reflects on his experience of working at Quantuma and how a dynamic yet supportive environment has enabled him to learn valuable skills that will stand him in good stead for the future.

Forensic accounting blends financial analysis with investigative techniques to resolve disputes, quantify losses, value businesses, and identify fraud. Unlike many traditional routes into accounting – which can appear homogenous – forensic accounting immediately stood out to me as more analytical and intellectually stimulating. Since starting my training at Quantuma, I can attest that it is fast-paced and varied – offering a blend of investigation, financial analysis, and problem solving.

No two days are the same

One of the major attractions to forensic accounting is the diverse range of work. Every case is distinct – bringing its own set of challenges. During my time at Quantuma, I have worked on matters connected to high-profile corporate scandals that continue to attract significant media attention. Grappling with the intricacies of cases that have captured public opinion and contributing to piecing together what really happened is both fascinating and rewarding. While our Managing Directors are instructed on some of the most prominent cases, our team also takes on a significant number of smaller matters. This offers trainees an opportunity to get involved early and take on responsibility sooner than you might at other firms.

The scope of forensic accounting is incredibly broad. At Quantuma, I have worked on a range of assignments across both criminal and civil contexts, including fraud investigations, business valuations, business interruption insurance claims, and loss of earnings disputes. These assignments have been for a wide range of clients from law firms, government agencies, and regulatory bodies to corporates and private individuals – across sectors ranging from construction to crypto-trading. The constant variety means you are always learning and adapting.

A place to grow professionally and personally

Starting your career in forensic accounting at Quantuma offers you the chance to study towards becoming a Chartered Accountant whilst gaining practical work experience and seeing its real-world applications. This combination forms an excellent foundation for your career. Whilst forensic accounting is diverse, many of the core skills such as problem solving, attention to detail, professional scepticism, and the desire to interrogate further remain constant, allowing you the chance to continually refine them. These qualities are not only valuable and future-proof but also highly transferable, especially in conjunction with a respected qualification such as the ACA.

A common misconception about accounting is that it is all about numbers and complex calculations. While technical ability is important, forensic accounting requires a much broader skill set of both qualitative and quantitative skills. Understanding and rigorously analysing data is only half the battle – a large part of the job is communicating highly complex findings clearly to people who may be unfamiliar with the subject matter. These findings are often central to extremely contentious situations, so the ability to explain conclusions clearly and in an appropriate manner is essential. As a result of this blend of skills, forensic accounting is well suited to candidates from a wide range of backgrounds.
